When he tried to kiss her cheek "avec un grand soupir," she maneuvered so he kissed her hand instead. He "devinait ma pensée" (divined her thoughts). At train station departure to Stuttgart, asked for her flower as souvenir "les larmes aux yeux." She gave it dismissively: "Quelle bêtise."
