• February 7: At "Hernani" performance. Marie accidentally pulls his hat thinking it's a footrest, causing embarrassment. She later touches his head twice accidentally. His father (whom she mistook for a tutor) and German aunt give her looks.
• March 17: Marie calls them "Les vieux Furstenberg" (the old Furstenbergs) who pass her: "me dépassent, les vieux fous" (pass me, the old fools).
